We have seen our country erupt over racial tensions during a time already stressed by a pandemic. The video of recent tragedies experienced by persons of color has raised our consciousness but so many of us feel helpless in deciding how we can help. The discussion of systemic racism has revealed how little we truly understand about racism and we find ourselves feeling uncomfortable with the thought that we might be part of the problem. That is a tough pill to swallow for those of us who believed we were raised to be tolerant and accepting.
Be the Bridge: Pursuing God's Heart for Racial Reconciliation, by Latasha Morrison, is a good place to begin if you want to better understand how much work still needs to be done before we experience true racial equity in our nation. You will find Morrison's writing user friendly and full of interesting stories never told in the history most of us were taught. I believe you will be moved by the stories she tells that help you appreciate the obstacles we have placed in the way of our African American brothers and sisters. You will find Biblical grounding for the steps that are necessary to achieve true reconciliation.
Be the Bridge is an invitation to stand with persons of color as we all seek the make our country where all persons are free to seek the pursuit of happiness.
