English Language Learners (ELL) classes meet at Noblesville First Monday through Thursday mornings during the school year, with an enrollment this past year of 155 students from more than 20 countries!
Classes focus on reading, writing, listening and speaking. We encourage students to attend twice a week for a minimum of 50 hours if possible. They pay a $40 fee to cover books (one for class and one for homework).
We currently have four classes with a paid staff of two teachers and three assistants, as well as a number of volunteers.
The program also features a Pen Pal Exchange with the church congregation and the United Methodist Women's Third Thursday Lunch where the women serve up delicious food and conversation.
Our adult students come with a myriad of language and education experiences. Some have limited language proficiency and come to us with only a third grade education. However, other students speak 3 or more languages in addition to learning English, and many of our students are highly educated in their native countries.
We currently serve students who are certified in their countries as teachers, electricians, business managers, accountants, psychologists, and lawyers. If possible, students work toward transferring their degrees, but many times, obstacles are too great, and they must choose a new path.
