The Metropolitan School District (MSD) of Washington Township's Adult Community & Continuing Education administers an English Language Learners (ELL) program that Noblesville First hosts Monday through Thursday mornings during the school year, with an enrollment this past year of 155 students from more than 20 countries!
Beginning & intermediate classes:
Monday, Tuesday, Thursday
9:15-11:30AM
Advanced classes:
Monday, Tuesday, Thursday
12:00-2:15PM
Classes focus on reading, writing, listening and speaking. Students are encouraged to attend twice a week for a minimum of 50 hours if possible. They pay a $40 fee to cover books (one for class and one for homework).
There are currently five classes with a paid staff of three teachers and three assistants, as well as a number of volunteers.
Noblesville First's United Methodist Women periodically serve up lunch and conversation for the ELL students.
Students come with a myriad of language and education experiences. Some have limited language proficiency and come to us with only a third grade education. However, other students speak three or more languages in addition to learning English, and many of our students are highly educated in their native countries.
Some students are certified in their countries as teachers, electricians, business managers, accountants, psychologists, and lawyers. If possible, students work toward transferring their degrees, but many times, obstacles are too great, and they must choose a new path.
